Chapter 105
The Things Left Behind
Nobody moved.
Not immediately.
The ruined hall remained silent.
Facility Zero had stopped breathing.
The Black Bloom that once covered walls and ceilings now looked dead.
Not disappearing.
Just still.
For the first time.
Still.
Xin remained sitting.
His fists rested on Andy's chest.
Or what remained of it.
His breathing sounded wrong.
Slow.
Uneven.
Like his body forgot what normal was.
Tara finally stepped closer.
Carefully.
"Xin."
No response.
Rion moved beside her.
"He's gone."
Still nothing.
Clara quietly looked at Andy.
Her dark body flickered softly.
Then she finally spoke.
"Yes."
Everyone looked.
Clara continued:
"He is truly dead."
Silence.
Long silence.
Nobody celebrated.
Nobody smiled.
Nobody shouted victory.
Because they lost too much to call this victory.
Tara finally crouched beside Xin.
"You need medical help."
Xin looked at Andy.
Not Tara.
Not Rion.
Not anyone.
Then quietly asked:
"Did we win."
Nobody answered immediately.
Eventually.
Rion spoke.
"I don't know."
Hours later.
The survivors slowly left Facility Zero.
Nobody wanted to remain there.
Dead Bloom covered entire corridors.
The city itself looked different now.
Buildings still broken.
Roads still destroyed.
But the red glow disappeared.
The pulsing stopped.
The city finally looked dead.
Not alive.
Outside.
Rain started.
Very light.
Sia looked upward.
"It's raining."
Dren looked confused.
"So?"
Sia quietly answered.
"It hasn't rained here for years."
Nobody spoke.
Three days later.
The world slowly started noticing.
Bloom zones became quieter.
Creatures became weaker.
Entire regions stopped expanding.
Some people called it coincidence.
Others called it impossible.
The survivors already knew.
Andy died.
The world noticed.
Weeks passed.
The resistance slowly rebuilt.
Not perfectly.
Not quickly.
Just enough.
Small shelters became towns.
Old towns became communities.
People started laughing again sometimes.
Not often.
Sometimes.
Tara continued leading.
Because somebody had to.
Rion stayed.
Mostly.
He still disappeared randomly.
But returned.
Usually.
Clara became weaker.
Much weaker.
Her body constantly flickered now.
She visited less often.
One day she simply said:
"My purpose here is ending."
Nobody understood what that meant.
She never explained.
One evening.
Tara found Xin sitting outside alone.
Again.
Some things never changed.
He stared toward the horizon.
Kaila's necklace still in his hand.
Tara sat beside him.
"You look less terrible."
Xin answered.
"Thanks."
Silence.
Then Tara asked:
"What now."
Xin thought.
Long time.
Then answered honestly.
"I don't know."
That was probably the healthiest thing Tara heard from him.
Far away.
Deep beneath destroyed Facility Zero.
Past broken structures.
Past dead Bloom.
Past ruined laboratories.
A hidden chamber remained untouched.
Dark.
Silent.
Cold.
A screen activated.
Very slowly.
A figure appeared.
Only hands visible.
A mask.
A chair.
Watching.
The Masked Overseer.
The screen displayed:
SUBJECT ANDY STATUS: TERMINATED
Long silence.
Then another message appeared.
PROJECT FAILURE
The figure slowly stood.
A quiet voice echoed through the room.
"Interesting."
The screen changed.
A new file opened.
Not Andy.
Not Bloom.
Not Zane.
A different file.
The screen displayed:
SUBJECT XIN STONEN
The masked figure quietly watched.
Then said:
"Its finally over."
The chamber lights shut off.
Later.
Very late.
Droplin.
The place where everything changed years ago.
Xin finally returned.
The streets looked smaller.
The buildings looked older.
The world looked quieter.
He slowly walked toward an old rooftop.
The rooftop.
The same one.
He sat down.
Looked toward sunset.
Held the necklace tightly.
For a moment.
It almost felt normal.
Wind moved softly.
Xin closed his eyes.
Then quietly spoke.
"Thanks."
Silence answered.
But somehow.
For once.
It did not feel empty.
